Today, somebodies dance theater enjoys a home base in San Diego, CA. The company enlists a new roster of collaborators for each project, including dancers, composers, and visual artists.
somebodies dance theater blurs the lines that define different dance idioms and cultural bases. With a special interest in the possibilities and processes of multimedia collaboration, somebodies endeavors to build evocative environments through arresting imagery and movement nuance. Choreographers Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen ricochet from the big, sweeping body to the quirky, pedestrian gesture, and from serious inquiry to outright humor.
In its first year, somebodies dance theater presented work throughout San Diego, including performances in such venues as Sushi Performance & Visual Art, the Balboa Park Casa Del Prado Theatre, and The Vine: Mojalet’s Place for the Arts. The company has been produced by and performed alongside Betzi Roe, Malashock Dance, Eveoke Dance Theatre, The PGK Project, Mojalet Dance Collective, Butterworth Dance, and the Patricia Rincon Dance Collective. Choreography by Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen has been selected for performance in the Emerge Dance Festival VI, the Celebrate Dance Festival, and the Ignite Choreographer’s Showcase. In addition to live solo, duet, and group performance work, somebodies has produced two dance films and has been screened in California and Washington.
Now in its second year, somebodies dance theater has become a company-in-residence at the Academy of Performing Arts. They have been selected to present work in the Dance Gallery Festival in Texas, the San Diego Dances festival, as well as invited to present a full-length concert as part of Mojalet’s Summer Sundays at the Vine, and chosen to perform a second time as a guest artist in The BareFoot Collective’s Extension festival in Tacoma, WA. The company has received commissions from the Academy of Performing Arts, the d’shire dance collective, and The PGK Project.
The Artistic Directors
Gina Bolles Sorensen completed her MFA in Dance at the University of Oregon in 2008. She has danced professionally in New York, San Francisco, Oregon, and San Diego, and has taught modern dance and other idioms in Oregon, Montana, Michigan, and California. She was awarded grants to study the classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam in India, and has published original research on imagery and dance learning in the Journal of Dance Education. Gina currently teaches dance at the Chula Vista School for Creative and Performing Arts and the Coronado School of the Arts, and yoga around San Diego County.
Kyle Sorensen earned his BA cum laude in Dance at the University of Oregon, where he was also recognized with the Emerging Artist award. He has danced professionally in Los Angeles, Oregon, and San Diego, and his choreography has been exhibited and awarded special honors in national and international venues. Kyle freelances as a dancer, choreographer, and teacher in many dance idioms, and is currently in the MFA program in Dance Theatre at the University of California, San Diego.
